Lower Level in Overland Park, KS

Lower Level After

It is not often that the client says” it is yours to design, have fun” Our client came with a limited budget and large open space in their basement. The question is: How do you work with such a large space without windows and large expanse of walls and have it feel warm and cozy? Our first thought was a second kitchen for the home. That would take a large area of space. We then considered a sectional for TV viewing and then an area for a bar table and chairs. Another challenge to overcome in basements are support posts and how to place furniture around them. As a professional Kansas City interior designer we space plan our projects to know where the furniture goes.

We also needed to carpet, paint and replace baseboards from a large flood from the past spring. After much decision and space planning we decided to eliminate the new kitchen. We did purchase a sectional with a warm gray fabric with fun pillows in great prints from Norwalk furniture. A really comfortable swivel chair from CR Laine was the perfect choice in a fun lime green fabric. She loved our selection of the bar table and chairs that seat 8 for hobbies with the children or great for entertaining.

The best feature of the room are the panels trimmed in dark gray paint and applied wallpaper inside that went on the back wall of the room. It is a great way to make a big statement with budget in mind. The walls were painted a warm gray along with black accents throughout.

Another idea is for a feature piece like the black chest with fun mirrors on the wall. We purchased many of the pieces in this room from our buying trips to High Point Furniture market. Many are not found in the local area. I love to create unique spaces for my clients. Our client was thrilled with the result.

With budget in mind we created a wonderful room to be in and entertain friends and family. It is a place where they spend many hours of enjoyment.
